Neoclassical Lava cameo of a Julio-Claudian Mars
This is a nicely sculpted lava cameo of Mars, dating to the early to mid 19th century. The artist has captured an excellent rendering of a Julio-Claudian emperor (Caligula?) in the guise of Mars (God of War). The natural lava has red and beige colouration, contrasting with a fine patina giving the piece both energy and great age! The back retains a hinged pin, enabling it to be worn. A nice object from the age of Grand Tours when visitors to Pompeii brought back such souvenirs as a testament to their travels.
