Cameo August
Cameo portrait of Augustus carved from a three-layered sardonyx, Roman about AD14-20 via The British Museum
Blacas Cameo 14-20 AD okres rzymski
sardonyx trzywarstwowy, na przemian biały, brąz
He originally wore a laurel wreath; this was replaced, probably in the medieval period, with the current setting of jewels.
Provenance is unknown; the first recorded mention appears to be AF Gori, Gemmae antiquae ex thesauro Mediceo et privatorum Dactyliothecis Florentiae, I (Florence, 1731), 47-48, who describes it as being in the Strozzi cabinet in Florence.
